Save the Date: June 20th Session – A Prelude to World of Coffee in Amsterdam
After our insightful discussions on the intersection of living income and pricing at Chocoa, the focus now shifts to the coffee industry as many of us prepare for the the 2024 edition of the World of Coffee event. Can the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive help us make a fair price the norm?
In 2024, we saw initiatives for improved farmers’ incomes finally making their way into the responsible sourcing sphere. This year’s edition of the most important event for the coffee industry is expected to link the quest to fair prices, living income data, and interventions, to other key missions of the sector, such as tackling deforestation, improving crop climate resilience, and scaling farm productivity and profitability.
In anticipation of the gathering in Copenhagen, the Lab will kick off the discussion. To set the scene, we have invited the team from the Future Proof Coffee Collective to share where the Dutch network of coffee producers, importers, roasters, and retailers stands, and what’s needed for income interventions, already successful in other commodities, to bring results in the coffee sector. Leading this initiative is MVO Nederland, the largest sustainable business network in Europe – with around 2,000 partners. Representing MVO, Marit Berkelaar will be joined by Alex Schumann from the brand Coffee Quest to bring concrete learnings from working closely with growers in Uganda to support increased income and a fairer distribution of risks, responsibilities, and, of course, value.
Tapping into the living income price discussion, the host Fairfood invited partners from Heifer Labs to unveil a new collaboration that resulted in a Living Income Pricing tool. This tool, a follow-up to a 5-year project in Honduras, comes with a comprehensive methodology that participants of the Living Wage & Income Lab will see first. To tell this story, we’ll have Volcafe and Molinos de Honduras participating in the discussion.
